Your Body Needs Iodine to Function Properly

Lugol’s Iodine Discovered in 1829   —

From the origin of Lugol’s to Art Pharma®

French physician Dr. Jean Guillaume Auguste Lugol is the originator of modern day iodine therapy. Dr. Lugol gained a worldwide reputation for his genuine interest in the wellbeing of his patients, and revolutionary devotion to quality treatment. Dr. Lugol created his formula in 1829, consisting of elemental iodine, potassium iodide, and distilled water. He counselled fresh air, cold bathing, and the use of his iodine solution in the treatment of tuberculosis, which was devastating the population at the time.

Although Dr. Lugol’s plans for his iodine solution didn’t unfold as he’d hoped, his potent mixture has had profound and unexpected effects in the world of natural medicine. Dr. Lugol never used his iodine solution in the ways it is used today, one would be hard-pressed to detect failure in the good doctor’s discovery.

Art Pharma® Lugol’s Iodine Solutions Are Government Approved for Sale, and have been legally authorized with the following indications:

  1. Helps in the maintenance of good health, Helps in the function of the thyroid gland,

Iodine Deficiency, The Thyroid Gland and Lugol’s

Iodine is a trace mineral that occurs naturally in the environment and is essential to the human body. We mostly depend on food to provide the iodine we need. Some Lugol’s Iodine users worldwide have stated that if we don’t get enough iodine, it can reduce the capability of organs, and lead to a host of different problems including goiter, muscle pain, reduced alertness, dry mouth, dry skin and even certain types of cancer. It should be no surprise then, that the same users of Lugol’s Iodine Solutions have stated that the stimulation of hormonal activity, control of the body’s base metabolic rate, the maintenance of optimal energy levels, the formation of healthy skin, the flushing out of chemical toxins, a general boosting of the immune system are some of the potential benefits from having good iodine levels and a balanced and healthy thyroid gland. We specify Lugol’s Iodine users have made these claims, since there is no medical study available that confirms such claims.

The thyroid gland is commonly known as one of the main organs in the body needing iodine for proper functioning. Living our busy lives with an iodine deficiency can possibly prevent tissues in the body from functioning normally, and in turn, stop your thyroid gland from producing two of the hormones it needs: thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Once this happens, thyroid functioning deteriorates quickly. Even though iodine deficiency is not the only reason that hypothyroidism can occur, increasing your intake of this mineral can stimulate the hormonal activity that will help you get back on the road to becoming your choicest self.

Then you, like 74% – 90% of Americans, are likely deficient in iodine. Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. These symptoms are also hypothyroid symptoms. When patients take thyroid medications for hypothyroidism, their need for iodine throughout the body (not just for making thyroid hormones) rises in part because of improved metabolic processes.

WHAT DOES IODINE DO?

There are many ways iodine deficiencies affect our health…LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW OF THEM.

SUPERCHARGES ENERGY PRODUCTION AND FIRES UP THE METABOLISM

Iodine is required to synthesize thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate metabolism, oxygenation, and energy production. When we are, iodine deficient we can feel sluggish and lack energy.

Patients taking thyroid hormones may also need to take an iodine supplement because all the cells of the body use iodine and thyroid hormone can increase the body’s need for iodine. Disorders that involve iodine deficiencies may worsen or become more prevalent, such as the incidence of breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers.

EASIER WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Iodine helps prevent metabolic weight gain and helps maintain a healthier weight and energy level. Iodine can fire up the metabolism so it can be much easier to burn calories.

HORMONE BALANCE AND CANCER

Iodine promotes hormone balance and production of all the body’s hormones – not just thyroid hormones. Balance is key for disease prevention, as well as an overall sense of well-being.

Iodine helps regulate hormone production and balance estrogen production in the ovaries in females and adrenal tissues in men that can stimulate the development and progression of hormone-related cancers, such as breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, and prostate.

Estrogen dominance in both men and women is dramatically increased in iodine-deficient, hypothyroid states. Estrogen dominance also appears to be a significant risk factor in the development of hormone-related cancers.

Incidence of hormone-related Cancers – breast, ovarian, uterine, prostate, and cervical, as well as stomach, lung, esophagus, thyroid, and throat cancers are markedly increased in iodine-deficient patients.

Incidence of goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland because of iodine deficiencies) and breast and prostate cancer have a direct relationship. Two studies done in Iceland and Japan – populations with high iodine intake – have a much lower incidence of breast and prostate cancer and goiter compared to other populations.

Iodine helps prevent fibrocystic breast diseases and is used successfully to treat fibrocystic diseases, such as uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

Iodine supplementation can reduce the amount of circulating cholesterol naturally by helping to address one of the underlying causes of high-cholesterol – hormone imbalances and deficiencies (cholesterol is the precursor to sex steroidal hormones and adrenal hormones).

Iodine sufficiency can help prevent or alleviate symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome starting with the Hallmark Hypothyroidism. Clinical studies show a direct correlation between iodine deficiency and the cascade of other diseases related to Metabolic Syndrome, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM

Iodine destroys viruses, bacteria, pathogens, molds, fungi, parasites, and malaria on contact.

Iodine helps prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Iodine helps prevent and treats H. pylori – a bacterial infection of the stomach that has been connected with ulcers and gastric cancer.

MENTAL FOCUS, CLARITY, AND MEMORY

Pregnant women who had higher iodine levels showed a decrease in SIDS and a higher childhood survival rate.

Iodine helps make us smarter. It promotes sharp thinking, mental focus, cognitive functioning, and helps eliminate brain fog in adults.

NORMAL FETAL AND CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Iodine makes children smarter. Iodine is essential for normal growth and development of children. Pregnant women who are iodine deficient have children with greater risk of mental development issues. A study showed a 15-point reduction in children’s IQs when pregnant women are iodine deficient.

Iodine helps support proper fetal development and growth along with speech and hearing development.

The percentage of pregnant women with iodine deficiency increased 690% between NHANES I (1974) and NHANES II (2000) Studies. It is well-known a low maternal iodine level in fetal development is associated with higher levels of cretinism, mental retardation, autism, ADD, SIDS, ALS, and other Myelin disorders.

PREGNANCY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Adequate iodine levels can also be important in the treatment of infertility because iodine is essential for healthy hormone balance.

Pregnant women who have adequate iodine are also less likely to experience high blood pressure during pregnancy.

Iodine can help prevent and treat endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts often related to hormonal imbalance and dysfunction.

FIBROMYALGIA AND MIGRAINE

Iodine helps reduce fibromyalgia symptoms.

Iodine supplementation helps resolve migraine headaches and other types of chronic headaches for many patients.

HEAVY METAL AND HALIDE DETOXIFICATION

Adequate iodine levels reduce the amount of halide toxicity in the body from fluoride (water), chlorine (water), and bromine (bread preservatives and flame retardants in most carpets).

Halides compete successfully for iodine’s binding sites on cells and hormones, rendering them ineffective. For example, thyroid hormones may contain atoms of bromine rather than iodine, as they should. This results in inactive thyroid hormone. Some practitioners and patients are perplexed at “normal” thyroid hormone test results with hypothyroid symptoms.

Iodine helps prevent lead from being stored in the body and other metals.

RADIOACTIVITY PROTECTION

Iodine helps prevent effects of radiation exposure from the use of cordless phones and cell phones.

Normal iodine levels can protect the thyroid and the rest of the body from radioactivity generated by nuclear accidents, such as the radiation drift from the Fukushima disaster that crossed the Pacific and is detected on the U.S. mainland.

HEALTHY NAILS, HAIR AND TEETH

Iodine is essential in formation of healthy skin, teeth, and shiny hair.

Iodine deficiency results in hair loss, which is also due to thyroid deficiencies.

Iodine supports hair growth and follicle strength.

A Brief Iodine History

Iodine has been used by medical practitioners for 200 years and was once considered the universal medicine. It has only fallen by the wayside in the past 50 years. Iodine was shown to be able to treat goiter in the early 1900s – a common problem away from the coasts where people typically have significant iodine deficiencies.

In Michigan and Ohio, studies conducted in the early 1920s on school children showed 40% had enlargement of thyroid gland or goiter. It was found that treatment with just a small amount of iodine cause goiters to go away. And, by 1928, there was a 75% reduction in goiter in the area.

Adding iodine to table salt was a result of these studies.

But, goiters are still around today. And, iodine is used throughout the body – not just for making thyroid hormones.

Can Iodized Salt Really Provide Enough Iodine?

The amount of iodine in iodized salt is not sufficient for total body needs.

There are 77 micrograms (ug) iodine per gram of salt. Average intake is 5 grams per day of salt, which would be 385 ug (micrograms) per day of iodine. Urine tests actually show lower, primarily because iodine in iodized salt is only about 10% bioavailable. Medical school teaches iodine in salt is adequate. Sea salt – which now many people use – contains very little iodine. Current RDA is 150 – 220 ug/day, which was developed in 1924 from findings of goiter prevention studies. This RDA is only the amount that helps prevent goiter. This amount is typically not sufficient for the entire body’s needs. This amount is inadequate to help prevent cancer. The body needs 100 times the RDA alone to produce iodolactone, which is required for normal cell apoptosis.

The thyroid alone needs 5-7 milligrams (mg) a day of iodine and is first in line for iodine from the diet. That was MILLIGRAMS – NOT MICROGRAMS. So 5-7 milligrams is equivalent to 5,000 to 7,000 micrograms – the current RDA is a fraction of this (150 – 220 micrograms). Just in terms of how much the thyroid gland needs alone, it is over 31 times the RDA amount of 220 ug – micrograms of iodine per day! Breast tissue and reproductive tissues require a similar amount. Without adequate iodine, breast and other reproductive tissues can develop fibroids. Every tissue in the body requires iodine too.

Clearly the current RDA requirement for Iodine is likely not enough…

Many healthcare practitioners now use 12.5 mg daily as the current standard for adult supplementation. But, it is important to work with your practitioner to determine your needs. Iodine does have contraindications, especially for patients who may have developed autoimmune thyroid disease. Iodine testing is an important tool to help determine an individual’s iodine level.

Did You Know these facts about Iodine?

Chlorinated water, bakery products, flame retardants and other dietary and environmental issues reduce our body’s ability to use iodine?

CHLORINE, FLUORINE, AND BROMINE COMPETE WITH IODINE IN THE BODY.

On the periodic table of elements, iodine is in a group called the Halogens. Fluorine, chlorine, and bromine are in the same halogen family. Iodine is lower on the table, which means that the elements above iodine in this group are much more reactive and actually compete with and displace iodine. Fluorine, chlorine, and bromine are all three more reactive than iodine. They are more electronegative than iodine, so they will win on binding sites and even displace iodine.

Why is Iodine so important?

Fluorine, chlorine, and bromine compete very strongly with iodine. Chlorine is in our water and so is fluorine. Our bakery products and carpets are now very high in bromine. Chlorine, bromine, and fluorine compete with iodine-binding sites on thyroid hormone. When this occurs, the thyroid hormone does not function as it does when iodine is in place. It creates a state of thyroid deficiency called Secondary Hypothyroidism. So even though you may have adequate thyroid hormone according to test results, because it is brominated – the iodine-binding sites have bromine instead of iodine – and the thyroid hormones do not work like they should in your body! Chlorine and fluoride in water also compete with Iodine and do the same thing. Hypothyroidism leads to many serious health issues, and obesity, too.

Fortunately, iodine supplementation can help increase urinary secretion of fluoride, chlorine, and bromide. These elements – fluoride, chlorine and bromide – are toxic to our bodies. Take care to drink pure water and eat non-brominated bread in order to greatly decrease your toxic exposure.
